Saddlebags by Janine Carter

Saddlebags have been around for as long as people have been riding horses.  When traveling by horseback in the old west, your saddlebags carried everything necessary to take you through a cattle drive or just bring your lunch along for the day.  Cowboys depended on them.  In today's riding experience there are many options available and ways to carry your gear.  There is not just the traditional saddle bags anymore.  There is also the hobble holders, hoof pick holders, gun holster and scabbardshorn bags, bottle holders and cantle bags.  All you have to do is look around and you will find a holder for it.  The choice you make depends on personal preference and what gear you need to bring with you.

Traditionally when you think of a saddlebag, you think of a leather pouch or maybe a canvas type material.  These materials are still used to make bags, but they are also made from new materials such as nylon.  Nylon is lighter weight, durable and less expensive than the usual leather, although nothing is quite as strong or gives you the nostalgia of the old fashion leather product.

Regular saddle bags are two pouches connected by a wide piece of leather called a yoke.  Attached with saddle strings, they lie behind the cantle and across the back jockeys.  Saddle bag strings are usually three feet long allowing you to tie a bedroll or rain slicker as well as the bags on to your saddle.  Strings are instrumental in being able to carry several extra items on to your saddle with ease.

Leather bags can be just as beautiful as the saddles themselves with high quality leather and some can be very ornate with elaborate tooling and concho's.  There is nothing so beautiful as a nice pair of quality saddle bags hanging from your saddle.  On the other hand, nylon bags are very durable also and you can stuff lots of things into them.  The main draw to nylon is the price as they are much cheaper than leather.  And you can get them to attach to the cantle or the horn very easily.  You can even buy bottle holders that will tie directly on to your saddle for your favorite bottle of flavored drink inside.  They come in all colors and prices.

For most people, its nice to have the old-time heavy leather saddle bags for show, but for actual use to just drag around, you can't beat the cheap nylon offerings of today's needs.
