Choke Chain Collar Training for Dogs by Janine Carter

Choke chain collars are a very valuable tool in large dog training.  They, however, are not meant to be used for every day wear as a regular leather or vinyl collar would be.  They are strictly a means to get your dog to obey in a fast safe manner.  Many people are loosing out on this great training tool because they have a misplaced idea of what they think might be cruelty to animals.  This article will explain how this collar is used and why.

When purchasing a choke chain collar it is important to get the right size.  Measure your dog precisely.  As with any collar, you should be able to put two fingers between the collar and the neck of your dog so keep that in mind when ordering or making a visit to a retail store.

Once you have the collar that perfectly fits your dog you must learn how to put it on.  Your collar will have two ends with larger rings.  Slide one end of the chain through the loop so that it makes an enclosed circle.  Your collar should form the letter P when you are slipping it over your dogs head.  As a test, slide the collar on a friends wrist and pull on the loose end.  If it tightens up when pulled, then relaxes when you let go, it has been placed correctly.  In this way, you are able to give a quick correction or pull on the collar then release the tension just as quickly giving a perfect correction.  If the collar does not react in this way, its probably because you have the loop coming up from underneath your wrist.  If you allow the choke chain to continue in this way, it will become abrasive to your pet, and will not give the proper correction.

The key to the choke chain collar is the ability to make quick precise corrections at the instant your pet needs the correction, then immediately releasing the choke to allow him to correct his behavior.  The release of the correction to the collar is your dogs reward.  Dogs only understand the "now".  This collar allows you to keep up with the "now" of your dogs experiences, correcting at the split second it is needed and rewarding in the split second he stops the behavior.

Along with using this collar, you must have positive reinforcement.  Here are the steps to follow:

!.  Correction with the collar,

2.  The dog immediately stops the unwanted behavior

3.  Give your dog immediate praise looking down in to his face

4.  Give him a treat such as fresh liver

Repeat these steps over and over and you will be surprised at how fast your dog learns to heel or stop with you and sit at your side.  There are a number of training exercises that you can participate in with your dog teaching him a variety of things.  You never want to stress the negative reinforcement over praise and rewards.  Make the training fun for your dog and he will learn twice as fast.
