The first thing you should consider before buying a horse is how much riding experience you have. Your riding ability should match the training of the horse you will look for. It is very easy to over-estimate your knowledge of horse care and your riding experience. Try to take an honest look at yourself and get friends to help you decide what kind of a horse is best for you.
The next question is "what do you want to achieve" with this horse? What sort of riding do you do? Hacking, showing, polo, driving, jumping are just a few of the things you might want a horse for. Also, think of the future. Where do you want you and your horse to be in the next five years or so. Do you want a horse that is already completely trained or one that needs a little work.
Novice riders need a horse that is already broke and easy to work with. Only very experienced riders should pick a horse that needs more control or guidance while riding. Know your limits where this is concerned. Look in magazines, newspapers and even on the Internet to find a good horse. Another good outlet is to ask your horse-riding friends if they know of anything for sale.
Always "test drive" a horse before considering to buy it. It is very common to try out a horse in this way before purchasing. If you are able, get a friend that is a good judge of handling horses to also ride the horse after you and give his or her evaluation. If you are taking instruction from teacher, they would be a good person to do this for you, especially if you are nervous about riding a strange animal.
